The Five Gifts

The Five GiftsAvailable Via Amazon

It's a club that none of us wants to belong to — you are comfortably living your life when suddenly your world turns upside down.  Everything normal is ripped apart.  Where do you turn to pick up the pieces?

It's a question many of us are asking in these troubling times.  While there is no way to predict exactly how you would respond to a catastrophic loss, this book offers a psychological roadmap through cycles of shock and trauma to discover meaning, renewal, and hope.

First a journalist and then a psychotherapist, Laurie Nadel recognized the need to help people whose lives were shattered by violence.  She created emotional first aid tools to calm acute stress reactions after catastrophes and led a program for teenagers whose fathers were killed in the September 11th attacks.  But it was when her own home was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 that she discovered the Five Gifts that helped her rebuild her life.

Dan Rather's June 11 tweet:
Noting that this is PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) awareness month I want to mention that @drlaurie's book The Five Gifts is on sale for $6 on Amazon.  This is an excellent book on ways to combat stress in all its forms.  (For transparency, Dr. Nadel is a good friend.)

In this practical and compassionate guide, Nadel distills wisdom from several spiritual traditions as well as the latest science on the positive benefits of the Five Gifts — humility, patience, empathy, forgiveness, and growth — gifts that can keep you moving forward when your life veers off course.  Each chapter includes keys to calm your mind, body, and spirit, plus inspiring interviews from first responders and survivors of such major events as the Thailand tsunami, the Rwandan genocide, and the Boston Marathon bombing.

It's impossible to predict how the heart heals or how long it will take.  Let this book serve as a spiritual compass to help you navigate through the dark times into the light.

LibJournalLibrary Journal reviewed Five Gifts on May 1
With Dr. Nadel's background in mental health, she is more than qualified to help you discover lessons on how to deal with acute stress from firefighters and law enforcement officers; creative ideas for emotional first aid; gives you the understanding of why it isn't fear mongering to contemplate future catastrophic events; and, a guide to self-care for acute stress adapted from instructions taken from SWAT.  The Five Gifts include such exercises as cognitive restructuring, meditating, creating meaning and purpose and a whole lot more to help better mentally prepare.

Joel Simon, Executive Director, CPJ

When she was a journalist in the 1970s, Laurie Nadel covered Chile following the military coup that brought General Augusto Pinochet to power.  That experience — combined with her deep compassion — led her to help create the Committee to Protect Journalists, an organization which since 1981 has fought for the right of journalists around the world to report the news.  In this book, Nadel draws from her experience surviving Hurricane Sandy while huddled in her attic and taps into her enormous reservoir of empathy to offer guidance to all those who have experienced trauma.  There is no one in the world who cares more than Laurie Nadel.

Dr. G. Clotaire Rapaille, Author of The Culture Code

This is a fantastic book.  I always like to quote that 'The problem is not the problem; the problem is how you deal with the problem.'  Dr. Nadel guides you through adversities using other cultures' wisdom to transform the 'problem' into a growth opportunity — her last gift.  This book is the gift that American society needs now to reassess its values and to reconquer its wisdom.
